Freeman Freeman & Smiley Founder Celebrated for Creating National Philanthropy Day 30 Years Ago

November 10, 2015

This week marks the 30th anniversary of National Philanthropy Day, an annual recognition created and implemented by one of Freeman Freeman & Smiley's partners, Doug Freeman.  After five years of lobbying with the help of national nonprofit fundraising associations, including dozens of trips to Washington, D.C. and thousands of letters to Senators and Congressman, President Ronald Reagan signed the proclamation on November 15, 1986.  The day is commemorated by state, provincial and local governments across North America, Canada and Mexico, honoring charitable citizens, companies and non-profits.

"This whole effort was never designed to elevate me," Mr. Freeman said. "I just found myself compelled to ask the question, 'Have we said thank you enough?' How dare we be so blessed by so many people and not extend gratitude."

After retiring from Freeman Freeman & Smiley, Mr. Freeman established Irvine-based IFF Advisors where he continues to work as a consultant.
