Steven E. Young, Partner

Steven E. Young's practice focuses on intellectual property, licensing, entertainment, real estate and general business litigation.  Mr. Young has conducted numerous jury and non-jury trials in both State and Federal Courts as well as arbitrations. He has appeared before both State and Federal Appellate Courts.

Mr. Young also has extensive experience in intellectual property and entertainment transactional matters.  Additionally, he has significant experience in all aspects of licensing of products such as fashion items, furniture, automotive performance products, luxury brand liquor and other lifestyle products, involving, among other things, television and motion picture characters, sports teams and personalities as well as original works of art.  His practice incorporates all aspects of motion picture and television production, marketing, distribution and publicity.  For approximately 15 years, Mr. Young was outside general counsel for a television production company, handling every aspect of their legal affairs with regard to the production of approximately 30 episodic shows.  His 43 years of experience in litigating across these areas has given him a unique understanding of the underlying business aspects of these types of matters.

Mr. Young also has broad and significant experience in nearly all aspects of real estate litigation, including, but not limited to: title; escrow; broker; boundary (including easement) disputes; lateral and subjacent support disputes; purchase contract disputes; access and view disputes; construction defects and condemnation actions. He has represented clients ranging from individuals to publicly traded companies, including in shareholder and derivative litigation matters.  

Mr. Young has presented to such groups and organizations as the International Conference of Shopping Centers, the Escrow Institute, various real estate brokerages, and has appeared numerous times as a panelist for continuing legal education programs, including the prestigious Georgetown University Continuing Legal Education program.

Mr. Young has authored articles for the American Bar Association, has been a Judge Pro Tem in the Los Angeles Superior Court, and has received numerous accolades in the Los Angeles Daily Journal and Metropolitan News.  He has been awarded an AV Preeminent® Rating by Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review, the highest rating in legal ability and ethical standards, and named to the Southern California Super Lawyers list (2016-2017), a designation bestowed on only the top 5% of lawyers in this region.

Representative Clients and Matters

  • Represented a longstanding Southern California restaurant chain in a Ninth Circuit appellate proceeding where the Court held  that the chain's menu design and decor constitute protectable trade dress, and awarded  disgorgement of defendant's profits during the infringement period.
  • Represented Tyrrell, a former Formula One racing team, and Chaparral Cars, Inc., the designer and builder of  iconic road racing cars, in establishing that the physical appearance of their race car designs was protectable trade dress.  
  • Represented JH Design Group, a Los Angeles based garment manufacturer, against the Walt Disney Company in a lawsuit concerning licensing rights to Disney’s five original characters.
  • Represented cosmetics manufacturer in trademark dispute concerning competing interests in virtually identical marks and the priority of use arising out of  pre-sale activities.  
  • Represented Chameleon Chairs, LLC, the manufacturer of unique special event rental chairs, in a dispute with a Chinese manufacturer of “copycat” chairs violating client’s trade dress rights.
